Abstract

This article recounts my history of relationships before and during a phase of listening to the rock band Wilco. My aim is twofold: to use my recollection of musical experience to meditate on love and why it can so often go awry, and to draw out some reflections on the process of listening. The acoustic plays a special role in people's lives. Because musical sounds also act as personal aides-mémoire, understanding our listening experience contributes to the recovery of personal memories and helps us make sense of our lives. We could all, therefore, gain from discovering our individual symphonies and narrating our emotion-histories. I believe there is an additional benefit to be had by sharing our musical histories as part of a more collective process. Perhaps the way that we listen to music may begin to address a profoundly important question: in a world where we are all individual and, to some degree, different, how can we find harmony?
