Abstract

ABSTRACT In the 1970s Paul McCartney was heavily criticized for writing trite, sappy love songs. As a response to this criticism, he wrote “Silly Love Songs,” another romantic song that many feel is among McCartney’s most saccharine. Is it really just another lightweight love song, though? In this article, I will argue that “Silly Love Songs” is an unusual and inventive song that unfolds through McCartney’s layering and juxtaposition of disparate musical modules. In attempting to stand up for himself in the form of a silly love song, McCartney actually created a song with striking depth and complexity.
