Abstract

Starting from the discussion about patrimonialism, developed around theoretical studies of Holanda and Faoro and about political culture and social planning, in Fernandes, this paper aims to analyze the way in which Lima Barreto apprehends social themes and recreates these same themes literarily, as aesthetic elements in the tale “A nova California”. This analysis starts from the assumption that literature is able to capture social and historical aspects of reality without leaving to be creating artistic and aesthetic. The tale in analysis allows capturing political context’s aspects Brazilian Belle Epoque, recreated literally. It's based on this context, while analysis category that we seek to understand the story like an artistic and literary production
