Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the ability of scientific literacy junior high school students in natural science subjects. The methodology of this research is descriptive qualitative. The total of students who involved in this qualitative research from SMP Negeri 2 Pontianak and SMP Negeri 10 Pontianak are 124. The value of scientific literacy skill used written tests which are given to the students by multiple choice and essay tests. The answers of the students are analyzed by the aspects of scientific literacy. Based on the analysis, the average percentage results of each aspect of scientific literacy are content knowledge in explaining scientific phenomena (27.25%), procedural knowledge in interpreting data and evidence scientifically (53.34%), epistemic knowledge in interpreting data and evidence scientifically (17.4%), and epistemic knowledge in evaluating and designing scientific inquiry (33.23%). Based on the grades achieved by students, it is divided into three categories of grades, high, medium, low. Based on the results of research the average scientific literacy ability of students included in the low category with a percentage of 73.02%. This proves that a small proportion of students have scientific literacy skills.
