Abstract

The design of circular concrete tanks on foundations of negligible compressibility is relatively routine, and widely accepted design procedures are available. If, however, the compressibility of the foundation is not negligible, then the design becomes significantly more involved, and no generally accepted design procedure exists in the technical literature for this case. This paper presents a comprehensive design procedure for circular concrete tanks on compressible foundations. The design procedure consists of the following steps: 1) foundation analysis, including determination of the settlement profile of the tank; and 2) structural design of all tank members with the settlement profile from Step 1 imposed on the structure. The ratio of the depth of compressible materials in the foundation to the tank diameter plays an important role in predicting the settlement profile of the tank. Both the static and seismic load cases are discussed.
