Abstract

Singapore's North East line is a 20-km-long subway line, including 16 underground stations. The civil works were let in 1997 on a design / build basis, with 12 major civil contracts and one trackwork contract. Most of the stations are designed as civil defence shelters. Provision has been made for future developments over many of the stations, and for future road, rail and drainage projects. The paper summarises some of the design requirements for both temporary and permanent works design, and comments on how these have been met in practice.
