Abstract
The proposed MRT North East Line (NEL) consists of sixteen transit stations and a depot. Thirteen of the underground stations are designed as Civil Defence (CD) shelters as required by the Civil Defence Shelter Bureau (CDSB) of Singapore. This paper presents the main CD design requirements and its implications on the architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical design aspects of an underground rail transit station. It shows how a public transport facility can be successfully designed to meet both transit and CD operational requirements.
