Abstract

In last two decades due to power industry deregulation, expansion of the transmission and distribution network, and increased applications of power electronic makes the power system more complex and make the estimation of power system phasor and frequency more difficult. For reliable and secure operation of power system the estimation of power system frequency and the magnitude of supply voltage are highly desired under such conditions. How to obtain information of power system voltage and frequency more accurately and efficiently has been the topic of discussion for decades. With the recent development of Phasor Measurement Unit which can provide time stamped phasor and accurate frequency information, it is possible to represent the actual power system status. The aim of this paper is to design microcontroller based phasor measurement unit prototype without the Global Positioning Satellite System for measurement of voltage amplitude and power system frequency.
