Abstract

Simplified submain design charts were developed which can be used to design submain size very quickly; when the submain slope is larger than 0.5%, the submain size can be simply read from the chart by using the total discharge and submain slope; when the submain slope is less than 0.5%, the submain will be considered as zero slope. The submain size can be designed by using the total discharge and an L/H-value (length and pressure head ratio) from the chart. These charts allow a maximum of 20% variation in pressure in the submain. When the field shape is not rectangular, such as a trapezoid or triangular shape, the design can be made by adjusting the total discharge so the design chart made for rectangular fields can be used directly. As the submain length is usually relative short, the submain size is designed for a single size and submain slope is assumed to be uniform and down slope.
