Abstract
Performance characteristics of sound recording and reproduction components have been improved greatly in the past decade. This has created a great demand for high‐performance, popular‐priced microphones. Sony successfully developed an electret condenser microphone (diaphragm electret) ten years ago. Its sound quality was just that of a condenser microphone, and its price was cheaper. But after ten years, Sony has developed a new high‐quality electret condenser microphone, such as the back‐electret condenser microphone (back‐plate electret). We claim that a back‐electret condenser microphone exceeds a conventional electret condenser microphone (diaphragm electret). This paper tries to describe the present development. The environmental stability of the electret microphone requires a back‐plate electret method. The higher sound quality requires a diaphragm of suitable thickness, material and frequency characteristics. Finally, less stray capacity is required for a low‐distortion condenser microphone.
