Abstract
This paper proposes a probabilistic method for calculating collision alert thresholds, taking into consideration of human behavioral factors. Many existing alerting algorithms do not consider human factors. However, the performance of active safety systems in smart vehicles can be improved by including consideration of human factors in a systematic manner. In this paper, we present a method for developing alerting thresholds based on anticipating the consequences of alerting or not alerting a driver to a collision risk. An intersection scenario and a front collision warning scenario are used to demonstrate the proposed probabilistic performance-based method.
