Abstract

AbstractIn power systems to reduce the burden on source, the reactive power components required by the load should be supplied by FACTS device. One of the FACTS devices is STATCOM. In this paper a cascaded multilevel STATCOM is created to supply reactive power components requisite to the load even if load is changed suddenly also. In this paper five modulation methods are implemented to attain voltage balance across the DC link capacitors and to provide reactive powers required by the load, if the load is changes suddenly also. The control techniques for inverter are Carrier-based Pulse Width Modulation techniques like Sinusoidal, Modified Space Vector, Third Harmonic Injected. The simulation analysis is obtained in dynamic state with load changes and in MATLAB environment. THD values in the output current and voltages of STATCOM, attainment of stability in the reactive components provided by STATCOM, ripple content in the voltages across DC link capacitors are considered as performance parameters for the STACOM. The in-depth examination of the performance results has been presented and identified the best PWM technique for cascaded multilevel STATCOM for reactive power compensation.KeywordsSTATCOMMultilevel inverterFACTS deviceModulation methods
