Abstract

This paper presents the modelling and simulation of a DC motor based Wind Turbine Emulator (WTE) using Sliding Mode Control (SMC) approach. The SMC theory is used here to develop a control law that governs the system to track the reference current set by the wind turbine model to get the desired output. The corresponding simulation is done in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. A performance comparison of the proposed SMC approach with the existing PI controller in terms of tracking speed, peak overshoot and settling time in the design of WTE is discussed. It is found that SMC gives a better performance than the PI in achieving the desired results.
