Abstract

Nuclear power plant construction in Korea has continued steadily since the 1970s. The pattern of these construction activities has been to build 2 identical units at the same site referencing the latest two previous units. An external events Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) has been performed for nuclear power plants under construction. Based on the PSA study, two types of design improvements have been identified. The first one is those associated with the software (design and engineering). The second type of improvements is those related to hardware and is only applicable to the new plants due to the high costs of replacement. The sensitivity study showed that the hardware change can significantly reduce the risk induced by the external events. This approach will gradually enhance the safety of the future plants from external events.
