Abstract

ABSTRACT Friction damper is characterized by two parameters, its stiffness and slip load. The present study provides the optimum values of these parameters providing the maximum efficiency of the damper. Various performance indices are evaluated at the optimum damper parameters and a new performance index is defined having a more consistent performance. This new performance index can be minimized to find out the optimum system performance. Fragility analysis is also carried out to identify the probability of slip and effectiveness of damper action as a function of natural period of the system and design spectral acceleration.
