Abstract

The first section of this paper discusses the economics of commercial office buildings. It is demonstrated that even under the most optimistic assumptions, daylight savings are small relative to occupancy costs. Therefore, improving occupant satisfaction and productivity should receive as much, if not more attention than energy conservation. The second section of this paper outlines an approach to daylighting design that meets both of these criteria. Detailed guidelines covering architectural, lighting, interior space planning, and HVAC considerations are presented.
