Abstract
The design characteristics, construction and operation of video frame scanners are very different to those of any other remote sensing device; in particular, the telescope design, the scanning mechanism and detector arrangement are unique. In turn, this gives rise to a unique geometry. This paper outlines these characteristics followed by an account of the methods devised by the authors to calibrate video frame scanners, including the construction and use of a special calibration plate and measurement of the plate images using a video monocomparator. Finally, the results of calibrating a representative selection of video frame scanners are given. Analysis of these results shows that a specific transformation polynomial can be used successfully to remove the effects of the inherent geometric distortion from video frame scanner imagery.
