Abstract

This paper introduces a new type of reluctance-based magnetic lead screw (RBMLS) that is attractive for many potential applications. The proposed topology presents the implementation of discretized permanent magnets (PMs) and ferromagnetic semi-rings. The proposed RBMLS has PMs in only one of its movable parts, making it suitable for long-stroke applications. The proposed RBMLS is analyzed through the 2-D and 3-D finite-element method in order to test its topology and obtain the force produced per PM volume. Detailed design features are presented for the realization of a prototype.
