Abstract

In this article a flexible substrate based compact microstrip patch antenna is demonstrated for Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) applications. The antenna resonates at 2.45 GHz with acceptable range of reflection coefficient values at different bending angles. To study the effects on reflection coefficient (S 11 ) and radiation pattern due to the bending of flexible substrate at different angles and planes are presented. Two side open ended slots in radiating patch and a rectangular slot in defected ground structure (DGS) are used to achieve wide bandwidth with patch miniaturization. The proposed wearable antenna has compact size with overall dimensions of 60×60×3 mm3. The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of antenna is evaluated through CST Microwave Studio simulator for 10mW power on antenna and placing antenna (5mm) above three-layer phantom.
