Abstract

Machinability can be improved using an insert with a micro-texture groove but the size, shape, and orientation of micro-texture are very effective factors to be considered. It must not eradicate coating from the surface of a cutting tool. Micro-textured groove has been designed and fabricated using a femtosecond laser machine on tungsten carbide insert with (CVD) chemical vapor deposition coating of TiCN (Titanium Carbo-Nitride) and alpha-alumina up to 20 µm. The spiral triangular texture covers 1.12 mm × 1.12 mm of the area with grooved edges upright to the direction of the flow of chips. 10 µm of groove width, 20 µm of wall thickness and 10 µm of the depth of groove have been taken. Spiral triangular texture acts as a reservoir of lubricant and provides more area for heat dissipation rate. Topography shows that after laser grooving the coating is still evaded on cutting insert.
