Abstract

Ergonomics is a branch of science that deals with the relationship between worker and workplace. Fitting the work to the worker is essential for pleasant working. Uncomfortable work centre leads to Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) to workers on long time basis. Creating comfortable working environment is the responsibility of employer. The study is conducted in Straight Tube Butt Welding (STBW) machines of Tubular Products Shop located in Southern India. Discomfort analysis is conducted to all employees with the help of questionnaire, which revealed that all are suffered by some kind of pain on their body parts during working. Posture analysis also carried using Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA). The obtained REBA score is 8, therefore the work centre is in high risk, investigation and implementation of changes need to be done immediately. A new stand is designed and constructed to handle the tubes. The stand height is maintained in accordance with the required height for respective working population. After one month of trail, again the questionnaire survey is conducted and posture analysis is carried. Obtained results are better and acceptable. Employees also feel comfort while working on new stand.
