Abstract

A helmet is a protective headgear used while riding a motorbike. The main purpose of this project is to provide a safer and smarter environment for the user with the help of technology. The implementation of this project is done by the usage of several features such as alcohol detection, hands free navigation and in-helmet transmission of music and phone calls for long rides. The bike and the helmet are linked using microcontrollers and have a wireless architecture. The sensors detect when the user wears the helmet and/or if the user is below the permissible level of alcohol intoxication to ride the bike. Once the user meets the criteria, the helmet module sends a signal to the bike control unit to start the engine after which the user can turn on the ignition. A display is also provided near the visor of the helmet where he/she can see the route to his/her destination through peripheral vision. This display can also be flipped open and closed whenever required with the press of a button. Using bone conduction transducers for optimized hearing and a mic present in the helmet, the user can pick calls or listen to music while leaving their ears open for traffic noise/horn signals.
