Abstract

In this paper, a technique for the direct cold drawing of polygon-section rods through a single die is described. A plum-blossom-shape die for the direct cold drawing of hexagon/square-section rods is designed, modified and analyzed to replace a series of converging dies in the traditional section drawing method. It dramatically increases the manufacturing productivity, improves the product quality, and reduces the manufacturing time and cost. The die design, illustrated by three different cases, is analyzed and modified using state-of-the-art process simulation software on a digital computer. An on-site experiment is conducted to verify the die design and manufacturing process control.
