Abstract

A novel Bragg grating based on the Bloch surface wave is proposed an analyzed in this paper. The grating is fabricated on the top ridge which is placed on the periodic multilayer platform. The BSW which is either TE- or TM- polarized surface mode is found to exist. The TE mode has a large field in the top ridge when the height of the ridge is small, while the TM mode has a little field in the top ridge. And the degree of mode confinement for the TE and TM mode is different. Due to the different distribution of the two modes, the peak reflection of the TE and TM mode is very different, one is close 100% whereas another is about 0, and a high Q ~ 1000 can be achieved which can be used in high resolution optical sensing.
