Abstract

We have performed a detailed analysis of a new design based on chalcogenide material for achieving high mode effective area for application in the IR wavelength. The core of the novel design consists of four rings of hexagonal arrangement of high refractive index rods in the background of low index chalcogenide material. The dependence of effective mode area upon the rod diameter and rod-to-rod distance is investigated in detail. The single mode operation for high power delivery in the IR wavelength has been carried out to insure distortion free operation with normal dispersion and low dispersion slope. Our numerical investigation reports an ultra high effective area ~100,500 µm2 around 5 µm of wavelength with Λ = 40 µm and d = 1.0 µm keeping the operation in the single-mode nature with very low propagation loss. Our design methodology will unleash a new dimension in photonic system with a new type of microstructured core design for both communication and IR applications.
