Abstract
Nuclear structure effects are incorporated in the description of fusion reactions near the Coulomb barrier using the interacting boson model. Predictions of this model are compared with the geometrical model and with sub-barrier fusion and mean angular momentum data for the fusion of $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ with the axially symmetric nuclei $^{154}\mathrm{Sm}$ and $^{166}\mathrm{Er}$.
