Abstract

Olivier Paradis, Desaix, the Schoolboy at Effiat. At the royal military school at Effiat, Desaix benefited from a scholarship from the foundation of the local marquis, long granted to his family. Without much pocket- money, the scholar underwent a strict upbringing, broken only by holidays spent at home, a privilege denied most of the boarders. Ironically, he thus avoided the military exercises which the others endured during these periods. The prizes he was awarded in history, geography, mathematics, etc., are better proof of the general knowledge he aquired than the single mediocre school report that has survived.
