Abstract
Of Rich and poor : Charity and power during the (Counter) Revolution in the Journal of Nimes (1789-1790). By examining the « charity » column in the Journal of Nimes, this article proposes to evoke the conceptions of the people held by upper class inhabitants of Nimes and the relationship between « rich » and « poor » that can be deduced during the first years of the French Revolution. The representation of the mayor, the Baron of Marguerittes, participates in the research of a consensus between moderates around a paternal figure, archetype of the charitable great man, thus confirming traditional social hierarchies. However, revolutionary innovations, around the practice of patriotic gifts and fiscal changes, divided the elites. They broke apart the research for a social refoundation and left the place open to radical political projects.
