Abstract

mary and Secondary Burn Surgery. Since introduction of Integra in 1980 as a synthetic bilayer membrane system for skin replacement, there is an increasing number of publications concerning the indications. First used as a temporary coverage after excised deep burns, the product was established as a dermal equivalente in primary burn surgery and particular in secondary reconstruction of scars. Besides these indications, there is an extended application of Integra according chronic wounds. The mechanical and biological features of the artificial dermis protect the tissue from fluid loss and bacterial invasion in open wounds. The Integra-induced formation of a neodermis through a straight matrix leads to an evident functionally and aesthetically highly acceptable scar.
