Abstract
Off-site nuclear emergency management - an overview. Off-site nuclear emergency management proceeds from the identification of protection tasks and the assignment of responsibilities to solve these tasks. Radiological fundamentals are the basic elements used to develop protection goals. For immediate and effective realization of the aims of protection goals in the event of an emergency, it is necessary to develop an operational emergency protection system. This consists of the components monitoring of contamination and radiation exposure, evaluation of monitoring results, and taking measures. Tests, training, and exercises ensure the continuous operability of this system. National and international exchange of information facilitate a co-ordinated approach in the event of an emergency. Furthermore, supplying information to the general public is one of the main tasks of emergency management, and necessary for the effective accomplishment of the protection tasks.
