Abstract

The specific heat, magnetization, susceptibility and electrical resistivity of Y 1- x Pr x Ba 2Cu 3O 7 are presented, Pr, unlike other rare earths. depresses T c and iinduces a transition from metallic to semiconducting behavior at x ∼ 0.6. T c versus x follows an Abrikosov-Gor'kov curve. The specific heat coefficient γ, at low temperatures, increases markedly with x, reaching values normally associated with heavy fermion behavior. Indirect evidence suggests that Pr is in an intermediate valence state close to 4+.
