Abstract

A theory of the dielectric properties of oxygen-isotope-exchanged incipient quantum paraelectrics (SrTiO 3, KTaO 3 and CaTiO 3 ) is developed. Taking into account the electron-lattice p - d interaction and the coupling of TO and TA vibration B, an expression of the soft mode frequency z for the quantum paraelectric is obtained. Frequency z is mass dependent including the dependence on the mass of an oxygen atom. In SrTi( 16 O 1 m x 18 O x ) 3, there is a critical x = x c value, at which zero-point motion of atoms (quantum fluctuations) is partially suppressed and the ferroelectric phase transition occurs at x > x c . The dependence of the ferroelectric transition temperature T c on x in the electric field is calculated.
