Abstract
Aplastic anemia is a rare disorder (0.5-4 cases per million individuals/y) in which both hematopoietic stem cells and bone marrow are damaged, causing pancytopenia (anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia). We report 2 cases of patients diagnosed with aplastic anemia that underwent surgical dental procedures. Patient 1, male, 27 years old, 4000 platelets/mm3, needed extraction of the 3 left inferior molars. Patient 2, female, 18 years old, 5000 platelets/mm3, had referred pain in the first left lower molar with the need of extraction. Both patients received platelet transfusion the same day of the procedure. At the time of the surgery, patient 1 had 23,000 platelets/mm3 and patient 2 had 27,400 platelets/mm3. Dental extraction was carried out with the use of intraalveolar fibrin glue, several simple interrupted sutures, and fibrin glue on top of the sutures for hemostatic control. There were no further complications such as hemorrhage, infection, or delayed healing.
