Abstract

Background: Orthodontic treatment is a treatment performed to correct an existing malocclusion and requires a long treatment time. The impact that often occurs in users of fixed orthodontic appliances is dental caries. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between dental and oral health knowledge and caries experience in patients who use fixed orthodontic appliances at the Orthodontics Clinic of RSHS Bandung in 2022. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional research design. The population in this study were patients using fixed orthodontic appliances who came to the orthodontic polyclinic with a sample of 17 people. The sampling technique used the accidental sampling method. The research measuring instrument used questionnaires and DMF-T which were then analyzed using the Spearman rank test. Results: The results showed that the knowledge of dental and oral health in patients using fixed orthodontic appliances in the Orthodontics polyclinic at Dr. Hasan Sadikin Bandung found good knowledge of 9 people (52.9%). DMF-T examination in patients using fixed orthodontic appliances with very low criteria was 15 people (88.2%). The results of the Spearman rank test showed that there was no relationship between dental and oral health knowledge and the caries experience of patients using fixed orthodontic appliances in the Orthodontics clinic of Dr. Hasan Sadikin Bandung with a significant value = 0.341 (α > 0.05). Conclusion: There is no relationship between dental and oral health knowledge and the caries experience of patients using fixed orthodontic appliances.
