Abstract

Issues of politeness and rudeness are often crucial in communication. The work shows a contradictory picture of politeness and rudeness in Russian language, which can lead to misunderstandings and break in communication. Russian culture and mentality has a serious influence in the formation of words, the structure of sentences and the conversation: the choice of topics, metaphors and permissible humour, indicators of benevolence or hostility. When Russians use the English language as a lingua franca, they continue to hold the norms of the Russian language. We are based on theoretical approach of cognitive linguistics A. Wierzbicka and materials of participant observation.
