Abstract

Tropical forests are currently being destroyed on a scale that lacks historical precedence, taking with them many known and unknown species. With a grim future for tropical forests, together with large (and seemingly insurmountable) social, political and economic barriers that hamper tropical forest conservation efforts, Emerging Threats to Tropical Forests should be welcomed. Humankind cannot afford to watch this environmental catastrophe idly, as human well-being and livelihood, flood protection, climate stability, crop pollination and other ecosystem services are all compromised through deforestation.
