Abstract

Demoiselle Cranes winter near Khichan, West Rajasthan, India and are traditionally fed by the villagers. The Society for Cranes Protection and Care was founded in 1992 and the cranes are now fed twice a day at a feeding station called "Birds feeding home." The number of Demoiselle Cranes has increased to several hundreds or even thousands as a result of the increased feeding. Age ratios of the cranes show that 12.1% of the population is made up of first-year birds (born in 1994). The feeding project is costly, with daily expenses ranging from $15 to $65.
