Abstract

This paper presents the design and implementation of delta sigma modulator (DSM) based transmitter for single and dual band transmission. This type of architecture is useful for multi-band transmission in carrier aggregation, which is key requirement in upcoming 4G-5G communication. 2nd, 3rd and 4th order multi-level DSM is used to evaluate the performance of transmitter in simulation and hardware for single and dual band transmission. LTE 5 MHz signals are used to validate the results. Measurement results shows that coding efficiency (CE) is improved by 4.48% to 13.45% in single band and 10.44% to 23.65% in dual band by increasing the order of bi-level DSM from 2nd order to 4th order. To further improve the CE, quantization levels of 4th order DSM are increased from 2 to 4, which results in improvement of CE from 13.45% to 65.12% in single band and from 23.65% to 49.42% in dual band.
