Abstract
A three dimensional (3-D) terahertz (THz) chiral metamaterial (CMM) formed by gold spline structure is realized. Stacking of splines are made in such a way that mirror symmetry is broken along all three principal directions of the geometry and hence large optical activity is obtained. Full-wave electromagnetic simulation reveal that the proposed structure shows broadband asymmetric polarization conversion for circularly polarized waves in the frequency range of 6.1 THz to 7.4 THz. A right-handed (RCP) and left-handed circularly polarized (LCP) pulse propagating through 3-D CMM is recorded. The delay time associated with RCP-to-LCP conversion and LCP-to-RCP conversion is computed through THz pulse propagation in the CMM. From the delay time plot, it is observed that proposed CMM shows negative group delay associated with RCP-to-LCP conversion resonance. The issues related with interpreting the group delay time for asymmetric transmission phenomenon are further discussed.
