Abstract
The very etyma of the Castilian words titere ‘puppet-show’ and titiritero ‘puppet-man’, together with that of Catalan babastell ‘stick used to handle the puppets’, controversial items for which we now suggest Arabic origines, again pose thequestion of the relative importance of the Islamic tradition of the “shadow plays” in the development of Western and most particularly Hispanic varieties of puppet theater. Some passages of Don Quixote would support this hypothesis and subsequently receive a new interpretation.
