Abstract

In order to understand the degradation of Pt/C as a fundamental study for the reduction of Pt loading, the degradation during various potential fluctuation patterns has been investigated. The slow anodic sweep and fast cathodic sweep potential pattern suppress the rate of the electrochemical surface area decrease. An increase in the higher potential limit accelerates the degradation. The degradation is the highest at the lower potential limit of 0.6 V vs. RHE. These behaviors are the same as the consumption of the platinum bulk and have a strong dependence with the formation of the surface oxide.
