Abstract

Injuries to the rectus femoris muscle are common in athletes. The complex muscle-within-amuscle anatomic configuration of the rectus femoris muscle makes it susceptible to various types of injuries. The purpose of this study was to describe the MRI characteristics of injuries to the rectus femoris whereby the inner bipennate component of the indirect head is dissociated from its superficial unipennate component resembling a finger in a glove. Finally, treatment and functional outcome may vary depending on the type of tear. Knowing different imaging patterns of these tears is important to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment.
