Abstract

The deviation from stoichiomery, the tracer diffusivities of 59Fe and 54Mn and the dc conductivity of dense, polycrystalline (Fe, Mn)O mixed oxides have been investigated at 1000°C. The oxygen activity and the crystal composition were varied within the whole range of stability of the (Fe, Mn)O phase. Both diffusion coefficients show very similar oxygen activity dependencies and their absolute values do not differ very much. The dc conductivity as a function of the oxygen activity has a minimum at large MnO contents and only increases with oxygen activity at lower MnO concentrations. For (Fe, Mn) 3O 4 mixed oxides, the diffusivities of 59Fe and 54Mn were determined at 1200°C as a function of cationic composition and oxygen activity. At constant cationic composition, all tracer diffusion composition versus oxygen activity plots show minima, indicating a change with regard to the type of the dominant defect species.
