Abstract
Objective: Tics are the hallmark symptom in Tourette Syndrome (TS) patient. Phenomenologically, tics are unique in that patients can volitionally suppress tics. Motor system inhibition involves the cortico-striato-thalamocortical (CSTC) circuit which includes the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA). The pre-SMA modulates the motor system via the CSTC circuit. In healthy adults, dual-coil Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) studies have shown inhibition of primary motor cortex (M1) by a conditioning pulse over the right pre-SMA. Here we use this protocol to examine the functional connectivity between pre-SMA and M1 in TS and control subjects.
