Abstract

This article explores a number of Jay Pather's site-specific performance pieces created together with various groups, the most prominent being the Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre in Durban. In 2005 the University of Cape Town (UCT) invited Pather to create a site-specific performance piece with a group of third- and fourth-year drama students. I was privileged to observe the creative process from beginning to end and it was during this time that I began to recognise the potentially transformative nature of these works. Pather creates rich and layered theatrical montages where politics, art and therapy collude. In this article I will discuss how in bringing together these elements and creating a space where they can exist in harmony, or otherwise, Pather is creating a space for transformative dialogue to occur.
