Abstract

Purpose: NICE guidance [1] recommends patients with muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) suitable for radical treatment be offered a choice between cystectomy and radiotherapy. A randomised controlled trial was not feasible, in part due to a lack of clinician equipoise [2]. Despite NICE guidance there is evidence of variation in practice across UK centres. We undertook a qualitative exploration of decision-making from the perspectives of patients, carers and clinicians. This forms part of a mixed-methods study investigating quality of life (QoL) after radical treatment for MIBC (Q-ABC) [3].
