Abstract
This paper focuses on swearing – the use of “bad language” – in the form of insults uttered by youngsters and adults in soccer stadiums within the context of Italian immigrant descendents in Northeastern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Considering that an insult is an offence towards a person and/or the group to which s/he belongs and towards the values which identify them, by investigating language forms used and semantic categories they relate to we are able to get a better understanding of the culture of the region under study
