Abstract
Following a brief survey of past research on Davydov's soliton mechanism for the storage and transport of vibrational energy in protein, the present status of the theory is evaluated. Although much remains to be done before the soliton stability at physiological temperature (310 K) is well understood, currently available numerical results on a simplified model of alpha-helix indicate useful lifetimes. Finally, some suggestions for future research are presented.
