Abstract
Data warehousing may become the next strategic weapon for the lodging industry. Many of the world's largest corporations have already adopted this approach to data management, which involves assembling an immense volume of data designed to help managers answer business questions. Return on investment is high, but the systems are expensive and risky. Interviews with managers of data-warehousing projects of the world's largest hotel corporations indicate that the hotel industry is just beginning to adopt the technology, some of them using data marts, which are smaller and more focused than data warehouses. Data ware-housing is explained and discussed in terms of its current and potential applications in the lodging industry.
