Abstract

In environment and landscape planning the instrument of “landscape development concepts” finds considerable attention. Reasons for the present popularity of this instrument might be based in the broad support of the topic “landscape development” found in laws, models and concepts and the search for new perspectives in the understanding of planning. On the basis of literature review and personal experience, characteristics and central themes of the landscape development concept are described and illustrated by examples of applications. Current and potential strengths and weaknesses are listed. Advantages and disadvantages are analysed and recommendations of particularly noteworthy and good practice examples in landscape development concepts are presented.
